Children at the unveiling of Goole station mural

Hundreds of children from Goole's schools have combined their talents to create the largest child-led station art installation in England.

Goole Station Mural was commissioned by Friends of Goole Station, a voluntary station adoption group, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the company town of Goole. Pupils from nine schools took part in the project, under the guidance of Dream Heritage, a Goole Community Interest Company.

Schools which took part in the project were: Boothferry Primary, Goole Academy, Hook C of E Primary, Kingsway Primary, Marshlands Primary, Parkside Primary, Riverside School, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary and Swinefleet Primary.

Each school was given a 25-year period of Goole history and a list of some of the events that happened during that time, which they have depicted with creativity and imagination.

Funding was provided by the Goole Fields Wind Farms Community Fund, Northern rail company and Goole Civic Society.

Rebekah Watkins, founder of Dream Heritage, said: "The Bicentenary Mural project has been simply transformational. We at Dream are all about changing narratives and creating positive futures. It has been such a privilege to see young people positively impacted by the mural project we've delivered.

"At the beginning we welcomed in young people who were worried of 'doing it wrong' or 'making a mess'; they didn't believe in their ability... but we encouraged them to have a go, and make their contribution, and we are so glad they did!"

Margaret Hicks-Clarke, Chair of Friends of Goole Station, said: "I'd like to thank all the children who helped to create this wonderful artwork to celebrate Goole's 200th birthday. It makes a bold, bright impact on the station and is bigger and better than we could ever have imagined. Thanks to Rebekah and John for bringing it all together.

"If you look closely you will see small details that may surprise and intrigue you. Why is there a crown on top of a tree, and what is the Beatles connection with Goole?"
