Goole Company Town Tour
In July 1826 Goole was opened as Company Town by the Aire and Calder
Navigation Company. In a period of 20 years a model town was developed,
consisting of Georgian and early Victorian buildings Post-war nationalization and re-
development means that only sections of the Company Town remain, but is still an
area of great significance. Highlights of the area include a Georgian Lock-Up, former
Victorian Theatre, one of England’s oldest purpose built hotels and Georgian shop
fronts. The tour will explore the remaining sections of the Company Town, why it was
built and outline key elements of the history of the town in its 200 th year.

Accessibility – The tour is on level ground and is fully accessible for wheelchair users
(this is if you don’t cut across the Leisure Centre Car Park).
Goole Docks Tour
By the early 20 th century Goole had developed to become the 10 th largest port in the
United Kingdom. It’s origins as a port however date to 1826 when the Aire and
Calder Navigation Company opened it news docks in Goole. Today elements of the
Georgian Dock layouts remain, along with docks and locks developed in the 19 th and
early 20 th centuries. The Docks also retains elements of its coal shipping industry,
including a Tanet Hoist and unique Compartment Boat Hoist. The docks also have
their secrets, with pieces of the WW2 Mulberry Harbour being constructed in Goole.
The dock tour will include a visit to the dock over the public right of way, the Dutch
Riverside and Bridge Street.
